Adult Protective Services looks into reports of abuse, neglect, self-neglect, and exploitation of adults. When a case is accepted, a social worker investigates fully and checks for problems that may hurt the person's well-being. This service is required by Ohio law. Doctors, social workers, and other professionals must report suspected abuse.

- Who can use it
- Anyone can make a report. The adult needing protection must live in Cuyahoga County and be age 60 or older, or be ages 18-59 with a physical disability, chronic illness, or dementia. The person must be a possible victim of physical, emotional, or sexual abuse, neglect, self-neglect, or financial exploitation. For vulnerable adults ages 18-59, the person must agree to accept help. Reports about abuse in state-licensed nursing homes or mental health group homes should go to other agencies instead.

- What to expect
- You can call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to report abuse or neglect. A social worker will write down what you report and start an investigation. You can also make a report online anytime. After hours on weekdays, your call goes to the child abuse hotline staff, who will handle it and send it to Adult Protective Services the next work day. If it is an emergency, staff can be paged. There is no overnight emergency shelter, but they can suggest other shelter options or you can call the police for help.
