Homestead Exemption

A program of Cuyahoga County Fiscal Officer

The Cuyahoga County Fiscal Officer's office reduces property taxes for eligible homeowners by exempting the first $25,000 of your home's value. Staff will answer your questions and help you fill out the forms. They also hold one-day community events to explain who qualifies and help people apply.

Who can use it
You can apply if you are 65 or older and own and live in your home in Cuyahoga County. You can also apply if you are 18 or older and permanently disabled, or if you are the spouse (age 59 or older) of someone who died and got this exemption, or if you are the surviving spouse of a public service officer killed in the line of duty. Your total household income for 2025 cannot be more than $40,000. Your home must be your primary residence as of January 1st of the year you apply.

What to expect
Call or visit in person to get information and an application. You must file your application by December 31st of the year you want the exemption. If you already get this exemption and moved, you need to fill out a transfer form with your new address during the application period.
