What to expect
Call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to start the process - it is best to call before showing up. For shelter, you can walk in if there is space, but calling first is better. For short-term respite care, a parent or guardian must drop off the youth and sign paperwork. Staff will contact the legal guardian within 72 hours unless there is abuse, in which case the county will be told. You cannot leave the shelter without staff permission or a plan made ahead of time. Most stays last 1 to 15 days or longer.
